Modulation of Atmospheric Rivers by the Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex

چکیده

Variability in atmospheric river (AR) frequency can drive hydrometeorological extremes with broad societal impacts. Mitigating the impacts of increased or decreased AR requires forewarning weeks to months ahead. A key driver Northern Hemisphere wintertime mid-latitude subseasonal-to-seasonal climate variability is stratospheric polar vortex. Here, we quantify frequency, landfall, genesis, and termination depending on strength lower We find large differences between weak strong vortex states consistent a latitudinal shift eddy-driven jet, greatest over British Isles, Scandinavia, Iberia. Significant are also found for Pacific Northwest North America. Most seasonal-scale modulation precipitation Europe explained by ARs. Our results provide potentially useful statistics extended-range prediction, highlight importance ARs bringing about response anomalous states.

the relationship between the stratospheric conditions and evolution, and the surface weather, not only has revolutionized our understanding of the functions of different atmospheric layers and their dynamics, but has also brought about potential implications for weather and climate predictions in almost any region of the planet. obtaining a better understanding of the field, particularly in sou...

Interactive comment on “Chemical analysis of refractory stratospheric aerosol particles collected within the arctic vortex and inside polar stratospheric clouds” by Martin Ebert et al

To point 2: The deduction of number distributions/mass mixing ratios from single particle data is linked with rather large uncertainties. Nevertheless, we have added the results of our calculation and the discussion of these values (see end of comment). The mass mixing ratio will be around 0.1 ppbm for all nonvolatile particles and the dN/dlogDP for a particle diameter of 0.75 μm is around 10ˆ-...

Interactive comment on “Chemical analysis of refractory stratospheric aerosol particles collected within the arctic vortex and inside polar stratospheric clouds” by Martin Ebert et al

This is a very interesting paper that presents nice results on the detection of solid particles in the stratosphere. We have two short comments: 1) Page 15 line 19 (part 4.1;7 Soot): the author proposed possible sources for soot particles in the stratosphere. The (transient) presence of soot in the middle stratosphere and their possible origins, including meteoritic material, were also obtained...
